An excess of visceral fat – a type of fat that accumulates in the abdomen and between body’s organs – can lead to health complications. These may include heart disease, type II diabetes, hypertension, stroke, breast cancer and colorectal cancer. Safflower oil contains a compound known as phytosterols that can reduce the risk of certain cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease. Phytosterols significantly reduces the amount of cholesterol that humans absorb, thus controlling the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Polyunsaturated fatty acids omega-6
Safflower oil contains omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, also known as PUFA. Although PUFAs are similar to saturated fats in terms of caloric value, they affect health very differently because they contain heart-healthy properties, essential for lowering cholesterol levels. It was found that the chickens fed with PUFA had lower insulin and cholesterol levels.
Clinical studies show that unsaturated fats like safflower can also reduce belly fat. Researchers at Ohio State University evaluated the effects of two different types of oil in obese postmenopausal women diagnosed with type II diabetes. While one group ingested 8 g of conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA, the other group were instructed to take 8 g of safflower oil. The group that took the latter showed the greatest reduction in belly fat, averaging between 2 and 4 pounds (900 g and 1.8 kg) after a period of 16 weeks. The study found that safflower oil raised the production of a hormone called adiponectin, which is associated with fat metabolism.
Although safflower oil is associated with a reduction in the consumption of belly fat, will lead to weight gain. Experts recommend a daily fat intake between 20 and 35 percent of your total daily calories.
