Summer is the perfect time to enjoy long walks in the park, time on the beach or hiking trips, but summer is also the time when you suffer the most because of different annoying insects that can harm you. One of them is the chigger, a small insect hiding close to humid areas and generally next to a source of water. Unlike mosquitos or other insects, the chigger cannot pass on any disease to its host, instead being able to produce severe irritations lasting for few days.
If you have an allergic reaction to the chigger bite or if your irritation will get infected, the problem will become serious. The microscopic chigger larvae are attaching to the skin and start to drill invisible holes where it will leave salivary enzymes that cause skin breakouts – what starts as a minor itching will soon become red bumps that look like blisters.
Homemade solution for chigger bites
You will really want to know what to do once you get chigger bites, especially at night when you will not be able to sleep because of the itching. This is the most effective way to get rid of chiggers, but you should act as soon as possible for the best results.
First, prepare a mixture of baking soda and water in a 1:1 ratio. Take it with you in the shower. While having a super-hot shower that will kill most of the chiggers, use the baking soda scrub on your skin. Wash it off after one minute using hot water. Get your skin dry after your shower and prepare a cream using ¼ cup aloe gel and a drop of peppermint essential oil. Cool down your skin and reduce the itching by applying the mix on the affected area.
I think the best solution in this case is prevention. Next time you go in an area where you can have contact with chiggers, make sure you wear long trousers and socks. This way, chiggers cannot reach your skin. Also, taking a hot shower immediately once you get back home is a good idea.
